A Little Bit Longer

I need to hold onto it for a little bit longer.

I asked on my Facebook feed today, “When do you take down your Christmas decorations?”

I’m still waiting for some replies. In the meantime, here are my random thoughts on this. In the scope of world events, this holds zero importance, but this is where my brain took me today.

Based on what I’m seeing on Instagram, I’m way behind on purchasing the latest offerings in holiday storage containers. I can’t even begin to deal with the fact that I haven’t even started cleaning and organizing where said containers will be stored. At best, I will sweep out from under the basement stairs and swipe at a couple of cobwebs. My old containers will do for another year. I don’t think that I am alone with this approach.

Have I mentioned yet that I have not yet mapped out my Valentine’s preparations?  This is not my world, so I’m not feeling too burdened by this.  When others have asked the Christmas decorations question, I have read the responses, noting the variety of answers given.  There seem to be different categories of people when it comes to this topic.

Some of you are ready to take down everything and pack it away as soon as the gifts have been opened.  Literally, the last gift wrapping has been removed and then you are ready to take it all down?  I need answers on this one.  Why?  Are you one of those who begin decorating for Christmas the day after Halloween and you are ready to take back your living space?  Okay, I can understand that.  Maybe you’re going out of town and you want to come back to a put-together living environment, I can understand that also. Beyond that, I have questions. I truly am interested in knowing where you find the energy to do this.

Then we have the other group of people. You start the takedown process during the week leading up to New Year’s.  This too is an area where I can wrap my brain around the process, but let me tell you, I look forward to that week in between the two celebrations.  That’s my time to just chill.  Between my business and all the holiday preparation going on from the moment that calendar page turns to October, I’m ready for a little “me time”.  I’ll shower, maybe put on some make-up, and possibly get dressed, but beyond that, I’m evaluating just how important an activity is before I get up out of my chair by the fireplace and stop reading.  I’m just over there enjoying the fact that I made it through another marathon race to provide everyone I love with special food, gifts, and memories.  Taking it all down to move into the next phase of the calendar celebrations is not on my radar.
For those of you who are all cleaned up and ready to face the New Year, the ones who can’t understand the need to cling to the past, I do have an excuse for needing the festive decorations up for a little longer, especially this year. I was still decorating on the day before Christmas. We had a virus come and visit our household for a while and I didn’t feel that vacuuming and decorating while others were sick was an appropriate thing to do. “Yes honey, I know that you don’t feel good, but could you get up from that chair? You’re in the way of my putting up the Christmas tree. Oh, did I awaken you when I vacuumed?” See, not very nice. Then I came down ill on Christmas Eve. Momma was not feeling festive. Our family get-together to celebrate isn’t happening until January 8th. That’s my excuse. After that, I will begin the process of taking down all the things that scream Christmas, but my “Winter Decorations” will still be up until the end of February. The gloomy Chicago area weather means that I need all the twinkle and sparkle that I can get.

I will be thinking of all of you wonderful get-ahead-of-the-mess people later this month. When I’m mumbling under my breath as I struggle to get my house back in order, you’ll all be smiling and thinking, “Poor dear. I did that ages ago.  What was she thinking in putting that chore off?  Spring is just around the corner.”

How about you?  Where do you fall in this category of Christmas decoration take-down?

Did you buy new storage containers?

Have you purged any of your Christmas decorations in the process?  Inquiring minds want to know.
